The person behind it all
Hello. I’m Annie.
I make things by hand, one at a time, from a corner of my house that has quietly been overtaken by yarn, hooks and half-finished creatures.
I have always made things for the people I love, for birthdays, for new babies, for the ones who are hard to buy for. At some point I started making them for people I had not met yet, and that turned out to be just as good.
Most of it happens around the grandchildren. I get an hour while they nap, then a proper stretch in the evening once they have gone home, and that is when most of these actually get made.
There is nothing clever or scaled-up about how this works. You ask, I make it, I wrap it, it goes in the post. That is the whole business.
The bit I feel strongly about
Why it is all still done by hand
Almost everything you can buy now was made in enormous quantities, by machines, for nobody in particular. There is nothing wrong with that. It is just not very interesting, and it is not what I want to spend my evenings doing.
When something is made by a person, it carries a bit of that person. The lines are not perfectly straight. The colours were chosen rather than calculated. Somebody thought about the person receiving it while they made it.
You can feel the difference when you hold it, and so can whoever you give it to. That is the only reason I do it this way.
, Annie
A few small things
Bits and pieces
-
Always on the table
Far more yarn than one person could reasonably get through.
-
Favourite thing to make
Anything with a face. You can tell halfway through what sort of character it is turning into.
-
Least favourite thing
Tidying up afterwards. It never happens.
-
Working hours
Around the grandchildren. Naptimes, and most evenings once they have gone home.
Where it happens
The nook itself
It is not a studio. It is a corner of a house, and it is almost never tidy.
Come and say hello
Whether you want something made or just fancy a nose at what is on the table this week, Annie would genuinely like to hear from you.
